I’m super into film history and was curious the sort of films/scenes the French Revolution has inspired. Here’s some of the most unhinged………
Carry on don’t lose your head (1967) -During the French Revolution English nobles, Sir Rodney and Lord Darcy aid French aristocracy against Robespierre. Disguised as “Black Fingernail” , Sir Rodney battles Camembert (ooh nice cheese that) and Bidet (HA!) , French secret police leaders
Marat/Sade (1967) -In an insane asylum, Marquis de Sade directs Jean-Paul Marat’s last days through a theatre play. The actors are the patients. (Sade was a real person who wrote about BDSM a lot there’s more than one movie about him 😭)
Mr Peabody and Sherman (2014) - self explanatory-
Castlevania: Nocturne (2023-) - During the French Revolution, vampire hunter prodigy Richter Belmont fights to uphold his family’s legacy and prevent the rise of a ruthless, power hungry vampire
Every Scarlet Pimpernel film - Britt’s with a saviour complex what’s new
The multiple Adam and Eve see the future movies
La Révolution (2020) - In a reimagined history of the French Revolution, the guillotine’s future inventor uncovers a disease that drives the aristocracy to murder commoners (this actually seems to be a well liked series surprisingly)
Danton (1983) - had to add this movie, dick riding Danton this much is wild.
Reign of Terror (1949) - Robespierre, a powerful figure in the French Revolution, is desperately looking for his black book, a death list of those marked for the guillotine ( Death Note French Revolution AU ig)
Assassins Creed: Unity (2014) - Paris, 1789. You play as Arno Victor-Dorian, an assassin during the French Revolution. As the nation tears itself apart. Arno will expose the true powers behind the revolution
Start the revolution without me (1970) - Two mismatched sets of identical twins, one aristocrat, one peasant, mistakenly exchange identities on the eve of the French Revolution
A tale of two cities (multiple movies inspired by the Charles Dickens book) - Alcoholic lawyer, Sydney Carlton travels to Paris during the reign of terror to rescues French aristocrat, Charles Darnay, husband of the woman he loves (imagine being that down bad)
Danton (1931) - (what do ppl see in him that I don’t-) At the height of the French Revolution, the fanatic Robespierre brings the popular but more moderate leader, Danton , to trial and demands his execution (me when I lie)
The King without a crown (1937) - Explored the possibility that Louis XVII, son of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, escaped death during the French Revolution and was raised by *native Americans* (historical rpf has never been worse!)
Blackadder (1787) - Blackadder seeks to prove he’s just as capable of rescuing people from France as the Scarlet Pimpernel (this series is so fucking funny)
All the Doctor Who episodes that relate to the French Revolution!
An episode of the Friday the 13th series that has a painting act as a portal back to the “time of Marquis de Sade” (I needa research this man he’s mentioned more than Robespierre)

Weird theory or take of the RPG Trilogy, or quadrilogy if including Shadows
We all know how polemic the RPG is due to big changes in gameplay and history matter, and basically leaving the Juno modern era plot to comic books. Which, liking or not, deeply hurted the franchise.
Many people would say it was Unity or Rogue or Syndicate's fault cause their many bad issues (mostly Unity), and forced Ubisoft to rethink how to get back with franchise, resulting in them many changes retcons. But what if i told you, here comes crackhead theory , that we shouldn't put all the blame in Unity and Syndicate, but also blame one of the most successful and loved titles in the franchise,
Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag.
PLEASE HEAR ME OUT BEFORE YOU SKIN ME ALIVE
SPOILER ALERT ABOUT AC4 IN CASE IN HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME.
One of the things draw people's attention about the game is the fact that you're supposedly playing as Assassin, like Ezio or Altair, acting as a pirate, and as bonus, being the grandfather of the protagonist of the previous title, Connor, a potential to have continuous rich lore about the Kenway family.
But guess what?!?!
For most of the story, Edward is basically just a pirate with the ambition to gain the most as possible, who in the year the game begins encounters an Assassin-turned-Templar, and ends up learning about the existence of the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.
Right after, Ed pretends to be said traitor in order to obtain his supposed bounty of coins, resulting in him killing Assassins in the process to obtain his supposed Templar bounty. He then flees after they discover his scheme, and is safe considering they probably believe he was killed by a storm on the open sea. From there, he returns to his old life as a pirate, keeping the skills and blades hidden from his encounter with both secret societies to use to his advantage, and doing it so alongside other infamous pirate of the time, Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, Anne Bonney, and of course, the most infamous one, Edward Teach aka Black Beard.
And the most impressive gameplay features is not the stealth (which was a improvement from the previous title. But the naval combat gameplay and the naval exploration on the new wide open world with many locations and activities on it.
Most player definitely spent and still spends hours and hours just sailing through the open world and attacking navy ships, which guess what?! It works with health bars to see how much damage you have to inflict to beat the enemy ship, or incapacitate it to then board it. Which was the COOLEST part of the game. And sailing in free roam in open sea while hearing shanties from the crew, divine man, divine.
There were indeed on land activities but mostly about looting, hunting animals, get collectives, treasure hunting. To achieve more money and resources to upgrade your character's personal equipment and The Jackdaw. The exploration of the cities maps was kinda in second place, even though being pretty fun. Havana, Kingston and Nassau, had a good maps for parkour. Personally, i kinda missed the notoriety system feature of notoriety levels and acts to decrease it.
Very specific things in the game has to do with the Assassin-Templar war, the main story mission and some major side missions and side activities. Mostly when Edward runs in on into the Templars and their associates or the Assassins in a way or in other, acting like a third element.
In matter fighting the templars is mostly for personal gain, like when he killed Du Casse to capture the island hideout
And an uneasy ally of the Assassins, considering he killed assassins in Havana, but then helping them identify the return of a Sage, doing assassination contracts all across the West Indies, and helping major assassins in the main locations of the game, for the sake of collecting some templar keys though.
And just after paying the consequences of his choices, seeing almost all people he holds dear to his life die, he has a morality crisis and he decides to join the Brotherhood, even having an flag of the Creed in his ship.
And after saying all that based on the fact that we play as a pirate who, throughout most of the games does just pirate stuff, that turns into a assassin just in the end of the story. AC4 is still one of the biggest successes of the franchise rivaling the Ezio trilogy. So we can a thought pattern of why ubisoft reached the conclusion that it should focus applying rpg elements, elements that makes the players complete vast quantities of side missions and activities to gain enough xp and level so it can proceed in the story. A story which doesn’t resolve mainly around the Assassin-templar war we saw previously, but flirts with it. These RPG-style titles have main characters who are NOT Assassins and/or have no interest in becoming one, but are involved in conflicts that precede or parallel the Assassin-Templar conflict, and their gameplay focuses on the features that Ubisoft THINKS players are most interested in.
It's more about exploring worlds by sea and/or land, searching for resources, and other things, not to mention the world maps being incredibly big and open without much places like the cities from previous games to do parkour, having much of the exploration at foot or mount or a boat. By
Much opposite of the main characters of the supposedly disappointing three titles Unity, Rogue and Syndicate, who were members of the brotherhood (later the templar order in Shay's case) through most of the story or even the entire story, and occurring in big cities, maybe without exception of Rogue, considering two of the maps of the game is the countryside of the Thirteen Colonies and North Atlantic, having mini cities implemented in the open map.

Assassin's Creed - Unity: Initiate OCs
Tumblr media
Heyo everyone! You know how AC Unity has a co-op campaign where you can play with up to 3 other players? But lore-wise, none of those players are necessarily Arno, despite it being his same model, because the campaign happens parallel to the main story. They’re just called Initiates.
Well, I decided to make those up to four nameless Initiates into fully fledged OCs.
This drawing is already a couple weeks old. I've since tweaked their outfits and their heights. But not by much.
Under the cut, you can get to know my children. I will post their backstories separately as well later.
Étienne Castellane-Adrian - Noble
Clement Castellane-Adrian - Noble
Cristine Cabrol - Citizen (middle class)
Laurence Lamarche - Citizen (poor)
-
Cristine and Clement are dating.
Clement and Étienne are brothers.
Étienne is gay, Laurence is bi.
Laurence has Eagle Vision and is biracial.
According to the game mechanics they all should have Eagle Vision. But I'm not going with those mechanics, (for realism, since EV is supposed to be rare,) so only Laurence has it.
They all got inducted at 18 years old. Étienne in 1787, Laurence and Clement in 1788, and Cristine in 1789, just a few months before Arno.
Étienne is the veteran of the team, and therefore the leader, due to having more experience, though his brother Clement competes for the title. Cristine is still a Novice (hasn't done her first Assassination yet).
-
Étienne is gentle and introverted, quiet by nature. Best one at light step and strategy. Admires Clement for being able to lie so well, but still thinks himself the better leader. Wants to run for Master Assassin, by teaching Cristine and Laurence.
Clement is the best at listening, remembering and manipulation. He can be a little rash, but his impulsiveness makes up for Étienne's prudence, and together they balance it out quite well while on missions.
Cristine is the best at disguises, distractions and trespassing. Étienne taught her about noblewoman customs and etiquette, and sometimes she and Clement infiltrate balls and official buildings as a pair. Cristine distracts while Clement uncovers the secrets. This is how they developed feelings for each other.
Laurence is the odd one out of the group. He has Eagle Vision, which is the only thing that balances well with the rest of them. Is good at finding hidden routes for entering and exiting their assignments. Mostly follow orders, without much independent thinking. Étienne is trying to teach him to work better within the team.

I’m having thoughts about Forrest again!
TH Masterlist
Tumblr media
I’m contemplating buying a PS5 so I can finally play Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla myself. Now, Forrest Bondurant strikes me as the type to be a secret history buff (as I already claimed in this post) and to thoroughly enjoy these games as well as the most recent God of War one’s.
I feel like Assassin’s Creed 3 was his favourite until Rogue came out. Also, he heavily sympathises with Connor because of his own heritage and deep respect for the people of the Appalachian region. But his interest in European history was truly sparked by Unity.
It’s that he doesn’t regard himself as the type nor of the right age anymore to make the career switch, but he’s contemplated becoming a history professor.
His favourite pastime is reading, both non-fiction and historical fiction. So it should come as no surprise that Forrest also loves discussing the differences between fact and fiction. At times you lose the plot quite quickly, but overall you listen to him intently, hanging on to every word he says because he makes history comprehensible and interesting regardless of the topic. Moreover, his enthusiasm is enchanting, enthralling.
And it pains you to see him retreat into his shell again when he catches himself getting carried away. Forrest will awkwardly clear his throat, nod while uttering a half mumbled and jumbled apology before he’ll lapse into his usual silence. Nevertheless, occasionally and if he’s in the mood, he’ll continue when you prompt him to. Squeeze his hand and ask a question or plainly tell him to tell you more when he turns really inward.
Though Forrest generally avoids technology, he does like watching certain channels on YouTube and the telly (though more so his laptop because he’s secretly also a writer and a bloody good one at that). I think he’d genuinely love and adore National Geographic (even has a subscription to their History magazines), History Calling, History Roadshow, and History Hit.
(Totally not saying this because I love those YT channels myself)
Forrest Bondurant is a history nerd and no one can tell me otherwise.🥰

On the 11th of November, nine years ago, Assassin's Creed Rogue was released in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
It is set between Black Flag and Assassin's Creed III. It also has ties to Unity, which was released on the same day as Rogue.
Tumblr media
The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events in the North-Atlantic and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassin Brotherhood, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templar Order, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set during the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars), who uncovers various secrets about the Assassin-Templar conflict while attempting to fix the company's servers. The main plot is set before and during the French and Indian War from 1752 to 1760, and follows Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American privateer and Assassin, who defects to the Templars and helps them hunt down members of his former Brotherhood after becoming disillusioned with their tactics. Gameplay in Rogue is very similar to that of Black Flag with a mixture of ship-based naval exploration and third-person land-based exploration, though some new features have been added.
Upon release, Rogue received a mixed reception, with praise directed at the game's twist on the traditional formula by playing as a Templar, the mature storyline, complex protagonist, and sophisticated depiction of the Assassin-Templar conflict, as well as the additions to the franchise's lore and the naval warfare gameplay. However, it was criticized for failing to innovate the series' formula, its short length, and similarities to Black Flag.

The thing about Assassin's Creed is that it's always been deeply fucking stupid but at least in the early days it did it with an earnestness that wasn't blatantly trying so damn hard
Like AC2, commonly regarded one of the high points of the series (which is now at eleven mainline games), culminates with the Pope using the Papal Ferula as a magic staff (which is actually an ancient high-tech mind control weapon) in a duel in the Sistine Chapel before running off to the secret vault underneath the altar where you go for a second round boxing match, this is absolutely fucking ridiculous by any measure whatsoever but it's presented so straight-faced and down-to-earth that you just kinda go with it like hammy classic sci-fi
But then they start getting desperate in AC Syndicate ('cause they rushed Unity and it came out the door broken so they made fanservice schlock to try and regain some goodwill), where you meet Alexander Graham Bell and he makes you some fucking Batman gadgets to help out your friend the liberal democrat Karl Marx and then get knighted by Queen Victoria, and like sure nothing's individually any more ridiculous than the previous games but there's just too much of it, like this is a game where half the main plot is about searching for the Turin Shroud which is really an ancient high-tech medical device and that's standard acceptable fare for this series but that sort of nonsense has to come with setup, nobody would buy the extremely silly AC2 finale if it didn't have a whole serious storyline leading up to it, the historical nonsense needs a decent foundation or it just reads like the self-insert fanfiction of a teenage history nerd
Then with the RPG trilogy we end up with the desperation of ever-increasing stakes to try and stay big & dramatic (which a stealth game series should never be in the first place) so we go from a glut of historic cameos to actual fucking gods and mythical creature which stretch the realm of plausibility even in this utterly batshit series, I just wish the devs would calm the fuck down

While Unity was arguably the peak of the classic formula games in terms of gameplay and environment, it fell utterly flat when it came to the actual history unfolding at the time. More time should've been devoted to that rather than Arno's personal story.
It's a shame because I always thought Assassin's Creed was most at home in the eighteenth century. Hell, the theme of two secret societies battling in the shadows over the fate of mankind fits right in. You could even argue that the Assassins and Templars embody two different modes of the enlightenment: the Assassins for personal liberty and the Templars for enlightened despotism.
And the developers wouldn't commit to a singular thematic view of the period either. In one side mission, you're taking out an expy of the Scarlet Pimpernel for the revolutionaries, the next, you're finding Saint Just's alleged human skin coat. It's all over the place. I thought this would be a slam dunk, seeing as Ubisoft is a French company. You'd think they'd be patriots who wanted to show off their history.
And there wasn't enough real history. Sure, you partake in some historical events like the Storming of the Bastille (one of the best parts of the game), the King's execution, the September Massacres, the Feast of the Supreme Being and Robespierre's capture, but those are few and far between.
Missed opportunities abound.
Tumblr media
Not sure on colors yet, but here’s my take on ac unity’s Maximilien Robespierre !
I really wish the game made him a more nuanced character than just an outright villain. Not saying he had to be a saint, but I would really have loved to see him as an ally that you couldn’t save in the end and see his paranoia grow throughout the game.
Notes: I designed him in mind to be analytical and difficult to read on the exterior so that could build up certain intrigue as well as give off the more popular, cold impression he has in general pop culture depictions. But surely enough, you can see there’s more to him the more you interact and learn about him. I also drew him younger than his design in the game because he honestly looked a bit too old for when he died at 36.
I don’t have a super realistic style or anything so a lot of my design choices wouldn’t work for the game’s realistic style, but this is my main reference for if I want to draw ac unity Robespierre some more (and mentally rewriting parts as I go). I’m not an expert or anything tho so take some (or most) of this with a grain of salt. I’m down for more research and reading recs for a more well rounded characterization of him btw !!
I had in mind to somewhat echo the gesture and some design details reminiscent of a bird or pigeon (since Robespierre was fond of pigeons irl), so the stiffer shape of his ponytail is meant to echo the fanned tail of a bird but it’s also a really clean cut like a blade just went through it. His ankles and wrists are also really slim for this bird-aspect reason.
He’s also got green tinted glasses for his poor vision, but if I were to bring this into color it’d be much darker to maintain the mystery around him depending on the shot.
I do like assassin’s creed’s little shoulder cape they gave him so I wanted to keep that !

CGI trailer without gameplay aside (which is a time-honoured AC tradition) I am excited for Assassin's Creed Shadows. I'm not ashamed to admit the fact that Ubisoft has got me. They made the perfect storm of concepts that appeal to me and distilled it into pure just-above-mediocre popcorn play. You see, I love me some history, I love me some mythology, and I love me some "secret history of the world" bullshit. And when you mix all that together with a narrative that's never outright terrible, you get the keycode to my brain's dopamine centres.
Every single time I think I'm done with the franchise they get me. After Revelations, they got me with playing during the American Revolution. After that, they got me with pirates. And even though Unity burned me so much I skipped Syndicate, they got me with the triple combo of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Vikings. And now, there ain't no way I'm passing up a chance to play as goddamn Yasuke in Sengoku Era Japan.
I'm a sucker for a ‘stranger in a strange land’ type story, and with an additional player character in the same campaign that is native to the ‘strange land’ in question, it's gonna provide a lot of interesting narrative avenues. Also, I unapologetically love the ever-increasing amount of mythological nonsense the AC games have pumped into their stories. Because who doesn’t want to pillage Early Medieval England while dual-wielding Mjolnir and Excalibur? A liar, that’s who. And guess what? When it comes to interesting and expansive mythologies, Japan is up there near the top.
I already have my perfectly polished, amazing-to-control, tightly-written historical samurai game and it’s called Ghost of Tsushima. Now I'm ready for a janky, way-too-open world that still manages to be pleasant to look at and explore while cutting a bloody swathe through it with unbalanced combat while a so-so narrative unfolds, and cool mystical ancient alien bullshit is thrown at me from every angle.
Oh, and of course, I’m ready to wait about a year for it to be discounted/added to PS Plus.
